A New Look at Natural Acne Treatments

By John Lenaghan

There’s a confusing array of product claims and treatment methods for acne that make it difficult for acne sufferers to determine their best course of action. The fact that there are several forms of acne, including cystic acne and the common acne vulgaris, complicates the picture. While the medical community does not have a cure for severe acne, there are a variety of products that will subdue moderate cases of acne and provide the sufferer with clear skin once again. Among these effective products are natural acne treatments that provide viable alternatives to the use of antibiotic medicines and ointments.

Natural remedies are derived from plants that have been used for generations because of their medicinal properties. The prestigious National Institutes of Health recently formed the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Health to evaluate the efficacy of herbal remedies by funding controlled scientific studies. Herbal remedies can be effective natural acne treatments.

Antibiotics are frequently prescribed for acne because there is a known bacterial component to cases of acne but certain herbs like Echinacea (Echinacea angustifolio) have known antibacterial properties as well. A soap made from Echinacea and other herbal ingredients is a viable antibiotic facial cleanser that helps fight and clear acne. This type of soap is also used for eczema, psoriasis, and acne rosacea. Scientific studies show that Echinacea helps the body provide the proper enzymes at the cellular level to protect cells against invasion by bacteria. Echinacea’s ability to aid in wound healing is beneficial not only for acne but also for insect bites and burns.

Echinacea is the hardy purple coneflower that is a staple of roadside plantings and home gardens. A more exotic and expensive herbal acne treatment is tea tree oil. There are over 300 species of tea tree but only one species (Melaleuca Alteronifolia) found in New South Wales, Australia is known to have antibacterial properties.

What is Tea Tree Oil?

Tea tree oil is derived from the leaves of the tree and is four to five times stronger than household disinfectants in killing bacteria. At the same time, tea tree oil is gentle to the skin. Tea tree oil is effective in killing the bacteria even in pus and will cause the body to eliminate pus from inside a pimple.

Tea tree oil also acts as a mild local anesthetic which reduces discomfort and also helps to eliminate the red irritation from the skin, improving appearance and reducing acne social problems. Tea tree oil is readily available from herbal suppliers and is simply applied to the affected area with a Q-tip. Tea tree oil is used sparingly.

Witch hazel is not just a brand name but an actual herb (Hamamelis virginiana) that is still recommended as a topical astringent and natural acne remedy. When using these topical acne treatments it is important to be gentle. While it seems to make sense to attempt to vigorously scrub away the offending acne, both medical doctors and herbalists recommend a gentle face washing with even just the fingers as the best approach. Scrubbing merely dries the skin and causes it to produce more oils that are implicated as one of the causes of acne. Don’t over-wash either; specialists recommend washing the face just twice a day.

Along with topical products, herbal dietary supplements can be beneficial as a natural acne treatment as well. Burdock root (Arctium lappa) has long been used to treat boils and abscesses and is an acne treatment. One of the reported properties of burdock root is that it will bring problem-causing agents out of the bloodstream, thus potentially making a condition seem to worsen rather than improve. However, the theory behind its use states that it is simply eliminating toxic elements from the body and providing healing properties.

When used as an acne treatment, herbalists recommend that topical burdock root be applied as well as taking a supplement that contains burdock. Burdock is typically combined with dandelion root (Taraxacum officinale) and golden seal root (Hydrastis Canadensis). Golden seal root was once used to prevent pitting of the skin caused by smallpox. Herbalists also recommend red clover (Trifolium pratense). All of these ingredients are implicated in improving skin conditions. Be sure to take these supplements only in the dosage indicated by the manufacturer or your herbalist.

Diet plays an important role in overall health and maintenance of healthy skin. A balanced diet that is rich in vegetables and fruits provides the necessary vitamins and minerals to support clear skin. A diet containing lots of vitamin A may lower sebum production and excessive sebum is one of the contributing causes of acne. The various B vitamins, especially vitamin B-6, can be beneficial as it is needed for proper metabolism of steroid hormones and sexual hormones are implicated in acne. Zinc is promoted as a cure for acne but there seem to be as many studies against zinc supplements as there are ones that promote zinc as an acne treatment. These vitamins are available as supplements but again, more isn’t always better; follow label dosing instructions.

There are plenty of old wives tales surrounding diet and acne outbreaks. Chocolate and fried foods have long been blamed for acne but there is no evidence to support this. However, the link between acne and dairy products is being subjected to scientific studies. A study published in the medical journal Dermatology in early 2005 found a link between teen acne and consumption of dairy products. For those whose acne is aggravated by dairy consumption, eliminating dairy products promotes clear skin. Another misconception is that acne is caused by dirt because the pores are clogged. Thinking that dirt is a cause of acne prompts sufferers to possibly over-wash the face and further aggravate the acne condition. Wearing make-up doesn’t cause acne either. Look for modern cosmetics that are:

non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores)
oil-free (water-based)
hypoallergenic (no added fragrance)

Acne isn’t just a teen-age condition and adults suffer from acne as well. The natural acne remedies have provided relief from acne symptoms for people of all ages.

Do You Know Which Is The Best Acne Treatment For You?

By Michael Jennings

Do you wish that there was just one treatment that you could use to clear up your acne?

Whether you’re a teen or an adult, if you battled acne you’ve gone through countless medicines looking for the best acne treatment. An inflammatory skin eruption that most commonly affects the neck, face, shoulders, and upper back, acne is perhaps the single most common skin affliction, and there are thousands of acne treatment products claiming to be the best.

But in truth, there are any number of acne medicines, soaps, creams and gels that could work for you – the best acne treatment for one person may be not the solution for someone else. This is because everyone’s skin is different, as is the degree and cause of their acne. The best acne treatment for you could be an inexpensive, over-the-counter acne medicine with an alpha hydroxy formula, or one with salicylic acid. Or you might find that those do nothing to help your skin problems, and instead need a more expensive acne treatment program like Proactiv, or a more powerful, doctor-prescribed acne medicine like Accutane. It’s usually only through trial and error that you’ll find the acne product that works best for you.

When shopping for acne treatments, you should also consider the possible level of toxicity in the products you choose, which may cause health risks down the line. For that reason, many acne sufferers rely on natural remedies that have a lower risk of complications from their ingredients, and there are such a wide variety of natural products on the market, you may find that one of them is the best acne treatment for your skin.

One of the most popular natural acne treatments is Australian tea tree oil. This anti-bacterial, anti-fungal remedy has been used for centuries to treat athletes foot, body odor, bad breath, cold sores and acne. It’s a strong substance, so adding just a few drops to a cotton ball then applying it to the affected area can help treat individual blemishes – this is not, however, a treatment for large patches of skin or your face, as tea tree oil is very drying. You can purchase bottles of tea tree oil online, at natural food stores and in some drugstores, and there are a number of acne products that use tea tree oil as a primary ingredient, such as The Body Shop’s line of tea tree oil cleansers, toners and spot treatments, Skin Medica’s line of toners and cleansers with tea tree oil, the ‘Blemish Touch Stick’ from Desert Essence, and Murad’s acne treatment gels.

If you find that tea tree oil works as an acne treatment for you, find a line of products that you like and stick with it. Start with an antibacterial foaming cleanser – harsh exfoliating products will only irritate your skin and exacerbate your acne – follow it with a good astringent or toner, and then use an oil-free moisturizer, preferably one designed for problem skin. Philosophy’s ‘Hope in a Bottle’ is one such acne product, designed specifically as an anti-acne, anti-aging formula by combining anti-bacterial ingredients with skin-soothing Vitamin E. Many companies like Murad, Dermatologica and Neutrogena sell moisturizers and spot acne treatments that work with a full line of acne products.

Adult acne is very common – in fact, 50 percent of adult women have it, as do 25 percent of men. Most adult acne can be easily treated to prevent breakouts, with the best acne treatment being a good regimen of cleansing followed by benzoyl peroxide directly on blemishes. In more severe cases, acne can be cured by retinoidal acne lotions like isotretinoin or by a hormonal treatment – usually drospirenone and cyproterone – under a doctor’s supervision.

Dietary supplements containing antioxidants, vitamins, collagen and herbal extracts can be very beneficial to the skin and speed up recovery from severe breakouts. Talk to your dermatologist, and don’t give up if the first acne medicine or treatment you try doesn’t have satisfactory results – it may take awhile to find the best acne treatment for you.

Find out more about the Best Acne Treatments or even about Adult Acne for those of you who, like Michael Jennings, have been unfortunate to suffer from it.

Acne Scar Treatments: Clearing Your Face Permanently

by: Meredi Wagner-Hoehn

Even if you’re recovered from a face full of acne, that obstinate bacterium may have left some additional skin problems behind in the farm of acne scar tissue. Although not all acne treatments affect acne scars, there are acne scar treatments which effectively reduce the leftover facial scars.

Laser Resurfacing

During the laser resurfacing treatment process, the lasers sand down the epidermis, the surface layer of skin, while simultaneously stimulating the dermis, the second layer of skin. This encourages new skin to form swiftly as the face heals. The carbon dioxide (CO2) laser most effectively treats acne scars for laser resurfacing.

Other, non-ablative laser treatments are available as well – including pulsed light sources and radiofrequency devices – and these options do not harm the surface of the skin. However, depending on your unique skin, these options may not be effective enough to noticeably diminish the acne scarring.

Tissue Fillers

This acne scar treatment involves your Austin cosmetic dermatologist injecting collagen under the acne scars to stretch the skin. Imagine when you make your bed, and you have to pull the top sheet out to get rid of all the wrinkles. Tissue fillers act in a similar way, smoothing out the skin. However, it is a temporary solution to acne scars, requiring periodic injections to maintain clear skin. The hyaluronic acid fillers, including RESTYLANE® and JUVEDERM™, are suggested by the best cosmetic dermatologists. As an organic ingredient in skin, hyaluronic acid provides high-quality option in filling acne scars.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion essentially sands away the surface of your skin, eliminating bacteria and dead skin cells along with minor acne scars. For microdermabrasion to effectively reduce scar tissue, patients generally require multiple treatments. Talk to your Austin cosmetic dermatologist, Dr. Steven Zimmet, to determine if microdermabrasion is right for your skin care needs.

Surgery

In cases of extreme acne scarring, surgery may be necessary to actively extract each acne scar. However, this invasive procedure should be saved as a last resort for acne scar removal.

To discuss your personalized skin care plan, call Zimmet Vein & Dermatology today. Dr. Zimmet, professional cosmetic dermatologist and phlebologist in Austin, will help you most effectively treat your skin condition.

Acne Treatment Products by Nnamdi Godwin

Acne treatment products are those creams, gels, pills and other preparations used for the treatment of acne and all acne variants. Acne treatment products are employed in the cure of spots, pimples, zits and other variants like blackheads, whiteheads and rosacea. These acne treatment products could be home-based preparations [natural acne treatments], plants, roots and herbs [herbal acne treatment] or pharmaceutically prepared acne treatment products.

Most of the common acne treatment products in the market today are either herbal based or made from synthetic materials and hydrocarbons. These acne treatment products can either be single therapy acne treatment products or combination therapy acne treatment products. Single therapy acne treatment products are those acne treatment products that offer just one type of cure like pills or creams or injections. An example of a single therapy acne treatment product is Acnope acne and anti-wrinkle cream which is just a cream.

On the other hand, combination therapy acne treatment products are those acne treatment products that offer multi-pronged approach to acne cure. The composition of such combination acne treatment products include pills, injections, creams, facial masks, gels, etc. as one treatment. Several examples of combination therapy acne treatment products abound.

Combination therapy acne treatment products are good. Single therapy acne treatment products are equally good. Choose what works for you. The bottom line is that whichever acne treatment product you choose cures your acne without causing you unpleasant side effects and leaving acne scars behind.

Another point to consider when deciding on acne treatment products could be whether the product is herbal-based or made from artificial materials and hydrocarbons. While no type is bad, most [if not all] herbal-based acne treatment products do not give you unpleasant side effects because they are organic in nature. However, you must read the labels to know the herbal combinations of these acne treatment products to avoid ingesting or topically applying herbs you are allergic to. Artificial-based acne treatment products also do the job. However, where clinical trials were not fully carried out prior to release of the product or where such trials were inconclusive, you may be faced with unpleasant side effects that may be worse than acne. In other cases, such acne treatment products may be labeled supplements to avoid scrutiny by the Food and Drug Administration.

In all cases, pregnant women must consult with their doctor before using any drugs and supplements including acne treatment products unless such drugs and supplements are clearly labeled suitable for pregnant women and nursing mothers. You will not lose anything but anxiety if you still take such correctly labeled products to your doctor.

Which acne treatment products are the best? The acne treatment products that remove your acne and prevent acne from recurring should be the best one for you. How do you identify such best acne treatment products? Read reviews and anecdotal evidence to decide the best acne treatment product for a successful acne treatment. One of such acne treatment products we have found to be effective and successful in treating acne is ClearPores skin cleansing system. It is beyond our duty to say more but we invite you to discover for yourself why we have recommended ClearPores skin cleansing system as the acne treatment products of choice.

The Best Way to Simply Treat and Remove Acne Scars by Elbert Alexander

Acne may cause blemishes on the facial skin, back, arms, as well as other locations of the human body. Many people associate acne with the teenage years, however it can strike any age group from toddlers to elderly individuals. Even though minor acne blemishes don’t typically result in long term acne scars, serious cases might well leave scarring that is long term.

At 1 time in life, or an additional, just about every single individual will experience some degree of acne. In some instances, the acne could simply be minor as well as a bit annoying as an individual goes from childhood into adolescence as hormones change.

Sadly, some instances of acne are severe and don’t respond readily to remedies out there over the counter. Regardless of how minor the acne, on the other hand, scars and pits can result.

You will find various remedies for acne scarring which support the scarred tissue return to a normal appearance. Few, even so, can remove the scars totally. The treatment alternatives obtainable vary greatly in approach.

The only strategy to choose the correct treatment for a person depends on elements which include the form of scars present, the size of the scarred tissue, examination of how the scars impact the person and their self-esteem, and even budget constraints. Your dermatologist can help you make a wise treatment decision when dealing with acne scarring.

What Causes Acne Scars?

Acne scars are, fairly just, the results of damaged skin tissue. One damaged, the body responds with a repair process which help stop infection. Collagen, a substance naturally produced by the body, is sent to the damaged tissue and, when an excessive amount of collagen is sent, a construct up of fibrous tissue results in a scar.

Acne scars may also be the result of tissue loss. The acne scars you could be most familiar with fall into this category and are referred to as depressed scars, or pock marks.

No person wants to have lifetime scars from acne. With consistently practiced proper treatment and cleansing, most acne blemishes do not have to grow to be scars. Basically clean the skin thoroughly with merchandise that are hypoallergenic and recommended for acne treatment. If over the counter products don’t solve the acne problem, your doctor or dermatologist can supply extra treatment options to help avoid scars.

Remedies

Collagen injections into scars could be an successful scar treatment however it is not a treatment which will be carried out 1 time and enjoy the outcomes for life. The injections must be carried out every couple of months. The collagen simply adds tissues into the scarred region and is finest for depressed kind scarring.

One more acne scar treatment is known as the autologus fat transfer. In this treatment, fat is taken from the body in an inconspicuous location and injected into the scar left by acne.

This treatment does not have to be repeated as often as collagen injects, however it could have to be repeated periodically as the fat transfer gets absorbed into the skin.

A treatment called Dermabrasion produces good outcomes for several folks with acne scarring. Under nearby anesthesia, a dermatologist removes a thin layer of surface tissue using unique equipment.

This procedure can frequently completely remove little depressed scars and reduce the depth of deeper acne scarring. It also offers a smooth, fresh feel to the skin. Microdermabrasion is really a comparable process but uses crystals of aluminum oxide which pass through a vacuum.

Laser acne scar remedies are yet an additional option. The intensity and wavelengths aimed at the scars alter the shape of the scar. This process can offer you permanent outcomes and may be very powerful but you might have to have numerous remedies to get the results you want.

In severe acne scarring cases, skin grafts or skin surgery may be recommended. These are extreme procedures which are use only in the most severe cases of deep scarring.

Acne, at very best, is annoying and trigger embarrassment. In severe cases, the scarring, if not treated promptly, might be rather significant. Treatments for acne scars vary in price also as within the results that will be expected.

If you are tired of your acne scars, perhaps it is time you accept control and get rid of them finally. For getting going, make sure you view: how to get rid of acne.

Adult Acne Treatment – To Treat a Condition That No-one Talks About

By Peter Crump

Acne is the most common skin complaint in the world. And it is not restricted to teenagers. Adult acne is a common but rarely discussed complaint that is thought to affect around 25% of adult men and up to 50% of adult women at some time in their adult lives. And adult acne treatment is often sought although the cause, namely the existence of the acne, is rarely talked about.

Adult acne treatment is very common.

As with other types of acne including teenage acne, the exact causes of adult acne remain unknown, but are thought to relate to changes or imbalances in our body’s hormones. It is suspected that these hormonal changes at various times in our lives lead to increases in the amount of oil in our skin which in turn leads to clogged pores or hair follicles in the skin. This results in waste matter building up under the surface of the skin which becomes infected by bacteria and produced the well known spots suffered by adult acne sufferers or acne sufferers in general causing the need for the search for an effective adult acne treatment.

There are a number of times in our lives when our hormones are more likely to get out of balance and these correspond with times of higher likelihood of experiencing acne. The obvious and most well known one is in our teenage years. However it is perfectly possible to suffer adult acne well into the later and even middle aged years necessitating adult acne treatment.

It is thought that adult acne in women is more common because of the reproduction cycles a woman goes through such as menstruation, pregnancy, child birth and menopause. And in some cases hormonal products such as the pill can be used by doctors as a very effective adult acne treatment to produce some hormonal changes which can have positive results on the womans adult acne. In fact this can be the best treatment for adult acne of this nature.

Normally though, adult acne does not result in a total face breakout as teenage acne can do, so can be more easily controlled by some form of masking such as makeup which negates the need for adult acne treatments. There may be spots, but not so likely to be thousands of them.

The only real reason for an adult acne treatment, or any acne treatment at any age, is cosmetic. And so where a cosmetic effect can be achieved by other means the need for a treatment is removed.

There are thought to be external factors which also contribute to adult acne, amongst them are stress, cosmetics and diet. Unfortunately none of these is sufficiently understood either so it is hard to get some hard and fast rules about what not to do and what to do.

One thing that is known though, acne is not caused by eating too much chocolate as was sometimes said to be the case. Cheese is ruled out too.

The remedies for adult acne are the same for other acne. First see your doctor to check it’s normal acne and not something more serious. Next try out some of the very good adult acne treatments on the market which may control your adult acne. These adult acne treatments are, in fact, the same treatments used for our teenagers.  Not every product will work for everyone so find the one which works for you and then stick to it.

Keep using it until you body decides it’s time to stop the acne.
A few other suggestions which may work, or may do nothing. Wash your face gently and regularly, but don’t scrub. Keep your diet healthy and follow normal good dietary practices. Keep your hair well washed, especially if it’s oily, and keep it off your face. And avoid makeup or too much makeup.

And try and avoid squeezing them. It’s not established whether squeezing is damaging or not, but avoid it if you can.

So, if you have adult acne and are wondering about what you do about finding a good adult acne treatment, you’re in good company.

Physical Treatments for Acne by Steve Welker

With mild cases of acne topical ointments are usually the best method of treatment. More severe cases may require more drastic measures. Some options include: antibiotics either orally or in ointments and physical treatments like chemical peels and drainage.

If your acne needs physical treatment you will need to see a dermatologist to perform them. Technically popping pimples yourself is a form of physical treatment but it is not an advised method of treatment. This can lead to spreading the acne causing bacteria and scarring. Having physical treatments provided in a clinical environment such as a dermatologist’s office will provide you with the best results.

Exfoliation

Exfoliation is the removal of the top layer of skin; this can be achieved either chemically or through abrasion. Chemical peels work by dissolving a microscopic layer of skin cells, which opens pores and removes the build up of dead skin cells. This is usually accomplished by using salicylic acid or glycolic acid. The same think can be accomplished through abrasion using an abrasive cloth or liquid scrubbing solution. Glycolic acid can be used every two to six weeks for about six months. Salicylic acid is a much milder form of acid and is included in many over the counter face cleansers; these can be safely used on a daily basis.

Comedo Extraction

Blackheads and whiteheads (comedones) can be removed with specialized instruments at your dermatologist’s office. After the skin is numbed with an anesthetic cream the Dr. will use a pen like instrument to open the top of the comedones to remove the dead skin cells and sebum. It is typical to treat the area with an antibacterial agent after this treatment. Remember you should not try this at home because it can lead to infection and increased scarring.

Drainage

Sometimes in cases of sever acne cysts will form under the skin. Cysts can be very painful and cause severe scarring even permanent disfigurement. Some mild cysts can be treated with cortisone injections, which should clear up the cyst in a few days. More severe cysts will need to be drained and surgically removed. Draining the cyst will greatly reduce the pain and the chance of scarring. You should never try to drain a cyst at home, there is a very high risk of infection and scarring if not performed with the proper sterile instruments.

Light Therapy

This is used to combat the acne causing bacteria, it is especially useful in hard to reach places. However this may only provide shot term relief because it does nothing to combat the excessive sebum and build up of dead skin cells.

Laser treatment can often be beneficial in the treatment of acne scars. This is capable of helping with lighter surface scars as well as deeper tissue scars caused by severe cases of acne. Currently there is research being performed on using lasers to treat the actual acne as well. There are several different procedures being tested. Using the laser to burn away the follicle sac that produces the hair, burning away the gland that produces the sebum and causing the formation of oxygen with in the bacteria to kill them. These procedures are all still under testing and it is not known yet if the laser will cause any long-term damage to the skin.
